Vijay Iyer @ Bang on a Can Marathon – 3-June-2007

Vijay Iyer

During my few days in New York City, I caught about an hour on Sunday afternoon of the Bang on a Can Marathon, held at the World Financial Center Wintergarden atrium (across the street from the WTC site). The marathon went about 26 hours all together, with quite a few interesting performers/pieces. The venue was unfortunately all glass, stone and metal, so the sound was extremely echoey and booming.

That didn’t stop me from thinking that the Vijay Iyer Quartet sounded pretty interesting; Iyer is a young jazz pianist who’s pushing some boundaries. I’ve picked up a few of his CDs since getting home, and they’re all good. ‘Blood Sutra’ is a quartet recording, ‘Raw Materials’ is a set of duets with long-time associate Rudresh Mahanthappa, and ‘In What Language’ is a project with poet/hip-hopper Mike Ladd (sort of new jazz hip hop).

Find out lots more about Vijay Iyer, and hear some of his music, at his site:
