What You Need

I found an interesting snippet of information in the NYT today. It was results of a survey published in Across the Board that compared people’s responses on whether an item was a necessity from 1970 to 2000 (initial number is the earlier figure).

second car 20% – 59%
second TV set 3% – 45%
more than one phone 2% – 75%
car air conditioning 11% – 65%
home air conditioning 22% – 70%
dishwasher 8% – 44%

They add that the 2005 figure for all of these would undoubtedly be higher.

Goes to show that the bar is ever higher… yet are these things truly necessities? And what might people be sacrificing in order to have these things?
