Vaux's Swifts swirling at the Chapman School

Vaux's Swifts at Chapman ChimneyI walked over to the Chapman School in NW Portland last night to watch the ‘bird show’ – the Vaux’s Swifts that pass through the area for a few weeks in September, nesting in the chimney at the school, then go on their way South. It’s quite a show, as thousands of the small birds whirl around the chimney at sunset, creating 3D patterns in the air, sort of like the effect of a tornado. Apparently they migrate as far as Central America and beyond!
